Affordable Housing:

There are several definitions of affordable housing.  It is not Section 8 housing.  Affordable housing is "work force housing."  Folks that work in Wilmington as firemen, teachers and many others should be able to live within the county and the city.

Housing should not use more than 30% of a family's annual income for their housing needs, including rent or mortgage, taxes, insurance, etc.

New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington are working together to establish a joint Commission on Affordable Housing.  We have already had a committee establish what the problems are, and this commission will work to try to find some solutions.  Ideas include incentivizing builders to provide work force housing through increased density or height as well as a financial contribution in lieu of affordable housing units. A financial fund could be used to encourage non-profits like Habitat for Humanity to build additional units.

I encourage anyone with constructive ideas to apply to serve on this committee.  You can apply online at the County and City websites.  You can also pass along ideas to any council or commission members.
