About Margaret

I was born and raised in Durham, NC.  After a work life in Virginia I returned to my home state and to Wilmington in 2002.

I have an undergraduate degree and a Masters of Public Administration from James Madison University.  While there I worked for a decade for a Member of Congress as the district representative for the Shenandoah Valley, managing satellite offices, helping constituents solve problems and move through the often confusing matrix of government.

I served on the executive committee of the local Chamber of Commerce and a number of other boards.  I am a founding director of a successful community bank and served as a bank director for over fifteen years.  While in Virginia, I owned and managed a few properties and learned a lot about property rights and zoning.

Back in North Carolina, in 2004 I began a brief career as a successful local Realtor for a number of years and left the field at the end of 2010 to stay home and care for my very ill husband who later passed away. I was appointed to the New Hanover County Board of Elections and served as chair from 2004 until 2009 when I was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Wilmington city council.  I have been elected to four-year terms twice and I am in my ninth year of service.

While it certainly can be frustrating, I enjoy serving my fellow citizens and trying to help move the city forward in a positive way.

I have a grown son, David Haynes, a UNC Chapel Hill graduate, his wife, Shannon (from Rocky Mount) and two granddaughters ages nine and eleven.  They live in Arlington, Virginia along with their two English cocker spaniels, Sophi and Pepper.  David practices law in DC, Maryland and Virginia.
